SOUR WINE

CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS

AFTER JESUS WAS BEATEN, HE WAS TOO WEAK TO CARRY HIS CROSS.  THE ROMANS FOUND SIMON, A MAN FROM CYRENAICA WILLING TO CARRY THE CROSS TO GOLGOTHA.

"And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull),  they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it."

Matthew 27:33-34  (ESV)

BEFORE NAILING HIM TO THE CROSS. THE ROMANS OFFERED JESUS SOME WINE, BUT HE SPIT IT OUT, REFUSING TO DRINK; BECAUSE IT WAS MIXED WITH MYRRH.  MYRRH CONTAINS CHEMICALS THAT REDUCE PAIN.

"And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots."  Matthew 27:35  (ESV)

LATER AT 3PM

JESUS CRIED OUT THE WORDS FROM PSALM 22; "MY GOD, MY GOD WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”  MATTHEW 27:46 (ESV)

BYSTANDERS THOUGHT HE WAS CALLING FOR ELIJAH.

"And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”

"And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink." Matthew 27:47-48  (ESV)

After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”  A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.  When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.  John 19:28-30  (ESV)
